Theories of Pelmeni

One theory is that Pelmeni were developed by the Finno-Ugric people who inhabited the region before the arrival of the Slavs. These people were known for making small, stuffed dough balls called “manti” which are similar to Pelmeni. When the Slavs arrived in the region, they adapted the recipe and made it their own.

Another theory is that Pelmeni were created by Russian hunters who needed a portable and filling food that they could take with them on long hunting trips. The hunters would prepare the Pelmeni at home, then freeze them and carry them in bags or pockets until they were ready to cook them over a campfire.

How to cook your dumplings

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a rolling boil.

  2. Carefully add the dumplings to the boiling water, making sure not to overcrowd the pot. You can cook them in batches if necessary.

  3. Reduce the heat to a gentle simmer and cook the dumplings for about 8-10 minutes or until they start to float to the surface.

  4. Using a slotted spoon, remove the dumplings from the water and transfer them to a colander to drain any excess water.
  5. Serve the dumplings hot, garnished with chopped fresh herbs and a dollop of sour cream, if desired.
